Our home is Lancaster, England, the City of Witches. The Castle looms over the city now just as it did in 1612 when James the First whipped his kingdom into a frenzy of witch hunts. Lancaster hosted the most notorious Witch Trials in our history, instructed by the King James and  meticulously documented in the court records in The Wonderfvll Discoverie of Witches in Lancashire.

The lasses of Lancashire were suddenly the source of macabre fascination. Theirs is a history of myth and truth:  They were feared, fabled, persecuted but powerful.   Betrayed by their own families they were hunted down by the King's Justice of The Peace Roger Nowell. The witches were marched across the wild landscapes from Pendle Forest to Lancaster and imprisoned in Lancaster Castle's dungeon then tried at the Assizes and hung on Gallows Hill. Their tale is one of  persecution at the hands of the church and royals alike, in the medieval backwaters of a 'wild and lawless' county.

The witches' memory lingers on in our ancient city. It seeps through the cobbled streets they trod from the Castle, down past the Golden Lion pub where they were granted a last drink, and finally to Gallows Hill.  The sea swirls their spirits in on the tide, wraithed in the mists upon the Lune. They're in the cool breeze that kisses the fells.
